Robert M. Rankin
Robert M. Rankin was a 1935 graduate of DHS and a 1939 graduate of the University of Kentucky School of Journalism. During his years at UK, he was undefeated in varsity track competition in the 100 and 220 yard dashes and received national recognition as a track star. His most notable athletic accomplishment was tying Jesse Owen in the 50 yard dash as a member of the UK track team. He was a charter member of the lettermens’ K Club at UK. Mr. Rankin served in the US Army during WW II. After the war, he returned to the Cincinnati Enquirer as a court reporter, covering many of the vice trials during the time when corruption and syndicate activity were prevalent. Rankin was the Outdoor Editor for the Enquirer for forty years. He had a passion for fishing and writing that took him from Alaska to the rain forests of Central America. As Outdoor Editor, he organized outdoor shows, presided over fishing contests, and led fishing expeditions to various parts of the country. He was involved in founding the Fort Thomas Swim Club, and A. J. Jolly Park. He taught journalism at the UK Community College in Covington that later became Northern Kentucky University.
