Selma Burdette Carmichael Campbell

Non-Graduate of Dayton High School, Honored as a Patron Award

Mrs. Campbell was a longtime supporter of Dayton High School and the Dayton community for decades she worked for the good of the students of Dayton Public Schools Mrs. Campbell overcame difficulties of the depression and indifference to females in her time to become a Superior leader in the community. Having little formal education, but great mental ability she became a self-educated icon in Dayton, Mrs. Campbell worked diligently with the PTA to the benefit of the students of Dayton. She served on the School Board for 16 years and served as Chairperson for 2 terms .While in office Selma realized the lack of skills the students were receiving to compete in the business world, so she instituted a 2-year commerce curriculum at DHS, additionally she was instrumental in opening a cafeteria at Lincoln Elementary. At her passing the family committed to a 10 year “Albert and Selma Campbell Scholarship Award” for a graduate of Dayton High School. This Campbell Award was one of the most prestigious awards a Senior could receive. The family continued the award in their names for 32 years. When the new High School was constructed, Mrs. Campbell’s family built the new Trophy Case. As you enter the Gym/Cafeteria this case is a part of her legacy to the school and community. In addition to these many great contributions Mrs. Campbell had a Husband, and six sons that served in the United States Marine Corps as well as numerous Grand and Great Grand Sons. Upon retirement Selma traveled to Taipei-Taiwan to live for 6 months with her son stationed there. Despite her lack of formal education having completed only the 8th grade, Selma taught English to 16 Chinese Students at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary three days a week. While not a Graduate of Dayton High School her many contributions and dedication the students of DHS, qualify her for this recognition as a Patron of Dayton High School
