Thom was nominated to the US Naval Academy in1962. He decide to not pursue a military career and returned to the Dayton area. Thom entered the University of Cincinnati where he earned his degree in engineering. During his time at UC Thom worked at the GE Jet Engine Testing facility in Evendale, Ohio.
Following graduation Thom worked in many areas in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. When Newport Steel was revived Thom became one of the first employees of the Plant, Thom was instrumental in the function of the plant running their environmental division and their energy procurement aspects.
Thom headed up Newport Steel acquisition of several other Steel Plants in the US and worked hard to make the company efficient. Thom was instrumental in making Newport Steel profitable and a source of income to many in Northern Kentucky. His efforts and the efforts of several others allowed the development of the NS Group on the Stock Exchange. Thom’s knowledge of the energy operations allowed him to create his own Energy Company providing Efficient cost productive energy to several other Steel Industry companies in Kentucky.
